YG Marley is a reggae singer and rapper with a cool, laconic flow who vaulted to mainstream success when his 2024 single "Praise Jah in the Moonlight" became a global hit, reaching the Billboard Top 40 and the U.K. Top Five.
Born Joshua Omaru Marley in Beverly Hills, California, YG is the son of acclaimed rapper Lauryn Hill and football player Rohan Marley and is the grandson of reggae pioneer Bob Marley. Raised in New Jersey, YG often joined his mother onstage during his childhood and began writing his own material in his early teens. He also did some modeling work alongside his sister, model/singer Selah Marley, who later featured YG on her 2021 track "Slick."
A few years later, he found widespread success with his first single, "Praise Jah in the Moonlight." Co-written by his mother, who also provided backing vocals, the song features a sample from Bob Marley's classic track "Crisis." Released at the end of 2023, "Praise Jah in the Moonlight" became a significant hit in early 2024, charting around the world and even making Billboard's Top 40. ~ Timothy Monger
